During public input at the May 22 Champaign County Board meeting, Jim Goss addressed the board about what he described as ongoing failures by the auditor’s office, the treasurer’s office and the county clerk.
Goss, who identified himself as representing “the taxpayers of Champaign County,” criticized late audits and unreconciled accounts. He said the county had “59 items to be done by April 30 and 7 were done,” and faulted the treasurer and auditor for not performing bank reconciliations. “The treasurer's office should be doing these bank recs. They always did them until 2019,” he said. Goss also said the county’s daily spending has risen from roughly $100,000 a day when he joined the board in 2016 to about $141,000 a day now.
He raised separate concerns about the county clerk, saying taxpayers were covering the state's attorney’s representation in a lawsuit and citing repeated errors in drainage district tax levies that required returns. Goss said these issues had persisted since 2018 and urged voters to consider competency when electing officials.
The remarks were offered during the public‑comment portion of the meeting; no board actions addressing these allegations were recorded on the meeting agenda or in the board votes that followed.
