A Republic resident asked the City Council to pursue construction of a sidewalk along Beale/Illinois Avenue after saying the road has become increasingly used by pedestrians and children on scooters and bicycles.
"It just is very scary," said Gina Pennywell, who lives on Island Green Drive, describing daily trips along Beale/Illinois Avenue. Pennywell told council she raised the issue previously with county officials and with the planning commission and had been referred to the city council for assistance. "We just need some help," she said, adding that sidewalk could be placed on either side of the road.
Council members accepted the request and said staff would route the information to the city department responsible for roads. The mayor noted staff had the resident's contact information and that staff would investigate and follow up; no timeline was set and no formal vote was taken.
Pennywell also said the road changes names at the county line โ Beale becomes Illinois Avenue โ and that some sidewalk exists further north near Civic. She provided a photograph of her proposal to council for staff review. The matter was raised during citizens participation rather than as a formal agenda item.
