Committee asks budget to consider $40,000 increase for Amityville volunteer fire department

Rutherford County’s Public Safety Committee voted May 20 to request that the budget office add $40,000 to the annual allocation for the Amityville Volunteer Fire Department, to come from unassigned fund balance.
The commissioner who introduced the item said the department faces rising operational costs, fleet needs and an increased call volume and that maintaining funding will keep the volunteer force viable while the county awaits infrastructure projects in that part of the county. The sponsor said the request equates to roughly $10,000 per quarter added to the department’s annual allotment.
Committee members discussed related station changes: Christiana Volunteer Department plans to maintain operations at a Fosterville location, which altered an earlier plan to reallocate funds. Committee members said the budget request is intended to keep Amityville and the county’s volunteer coverage stable during the transition. Chief Farley and county staff were reported to support continued volunteer coverage in that area.
The motion to ask budget to include the $40,000 increase from unassigned fund balance passed on roll call.
The committee directed staff to work with the budget office to place the request before the budget committee for publication and consideration; final funding depends on budget-office review and formal appropriation.
