Council OKs purchase of 15 SCBA packs, 30 cylinders and facepieces with CDBG funds

City Council on May 22 authorized the Williamsport Bureau of Fire to purchase 15 SCBA packs, 30 cylinders and 15 facepieces from MES for $140,250, using Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds.
Chief Onks presented the request and said the department previously bought 10 packs with ARPA funding and this purchase will bring the department’s inventory to 25 packs. He said the first SCBA deliveries are expected between mid‑June and July and noted equipment costs have risen, so future purchases will be budgeted in capital plans.
Finance committee members supported the purchase and noted the CDBG funding source covered the cost for this tranche. Council approved the resolution by recorded vote (7–0) at the meeting.
Council members asked how many additional packs the department would need to equip all personnel; Onks said roughly 10 more would be needed for full coverage and that a capital line item for SCBA replacement exists to fund future purchases.
