Council tables extension of Cutting Edge Baseball lease after questions about Major League Baseball maintenance language

City Council on May 22 voted to table a proposed lease extension with Cutting Edge Baseball, LLC (the Crosscutters) after members raised concerns about language that assumed Major League Baseball (MLB) would continue maintaining field equipment.

Mayor Derek Slaughter presented the lease, noting only minor edits and that the scoreboard remained under warranty. Council members questioned a provision that says if Major League Baseball discontinues maintaining the playing field under the current MLB city lease the city would assume maintenance obligations. Councilman Mackey asked whether the MLB contract was current; staff said the MLB contract was “about to expire” or may already have expired and that the city had asked MLB to provide updated paperwork.

Because the resolution includes language that could obligate the city to supply and maintain equipment if MLB were no longer maintaining the field, Mackey moved to table the lease to resolve the clause; Councilman Pulizzi seconded. The motion to table passed (6–0) and council asked administration to obtain the MLB contract documentation and, if needed, revise the lease language before bringing the item back for approval.

Why it matters: the lease governs operations at a city athletic facility and assigns maintenance responsibilities. Council members said they wanted to avoid inadvertently accepting a long‑term city maintenance obligation if the MLB relationship changes.

No lease was executed at the meeting because the item was tabled pending receipt of MLB documentation and clarified lease language.
