Renovation under way at Ron Lake Park cultural center; $75,000 set for public-art component

The Oviedo Recreation and Parks Advisory Board received a construction and public-art update on the Ron Lake Park African American culture and historical center. Paul, a staff member, said renovations have begun; "we've removed the roof. It's all dried in, ready to actually add the new, metal paneling," and interior work on two bathrooms "has begun. There's actually new tile on the walls."

Why it matters: The project includes both building renovation and an art program intended to reflect local history. Staff said the renovations are part of a grant with a completion goal of December 2026 and that the city allocated $75,000 to select four artists for site-specific pieces including a bronze sculpture, a mosaic wall tile, and interior artworks.

Paul told the board that the facility has been closed for several months for demolition and remodeling and that exterior painting and interior finishes are progressing. On the art program, staff said they plan a public input meeting to bring the artists and community members together; "we'll do some surveys. We'll we'll see public input on what they'd like to see brought to the cultural center," Paul said. The meeting is planned as a two-hour Saturday session at Riverside Park or another neighborhood site, and staff will provide online surveys and flyers to encourage participation.

Staff emphasized they expect more visible progress in three to four weeks and that the grant's deadline is December 2026. The board was urged to share flyers and encourage neighborhood participation. No formal board action or vote occurred on the project during the meeting.
