Salt Lake City Council members on the dais unanimously adopted a joint ceremonial resolution recognizing June 2025 as Pride Month and presented it to the Utah Pride Center.
The resolution, read aloud by Councilwoman Lopez Chavez, notes Pride Month’s historical roots in the Stonewall riots and affirms the city’s support for LGBTQ+ residents, including those who are transgender, queer, two-spirit, nonbinary and other identities. The council voted to adopt the measure after a brief presentation; the motion to adopt was moved and seconded and passed unanimously with Councilmember Pui absent.
The resolution was accompanied by remarks from Chad Kahl, executive director of the Utah Pride Center, who accepted the resolution on behalf of the center and the state’s LGBTQ+ community. Kahl said symbols matter and said the proclamation “remind[s] people they are seen” and “show[s] our youth there’s a future for them here.” He praised city leaders’ visibility and said this year’s Pride theme, “radical love,” matched the body’s action.
Council members described the resolution as ceremonial; no budgetary or policy changes were attached. After the vote, the council welcomed Kahl to the podium and invited him to receive the resolution and a photo at the chamber.
The symbolic vote arrived amid speakers’ remarks about legislative pressures facing LGBTQ+ communities nationally and locally; the council’s adoption of the resolution signals municipal recognition and public support but does not itself create new city programs or funding.
The ceremonial resolution was adopted and presented at the meeting; council staff and the Utah Pride Center will proceed with outreach and planned Pride Month events independently.
