A commissioner described the Solid Waste Authority draft as "a little disappointing" and said the plan included recommendations to continue landfilling rather than pursue waste-to-energy options or stronger recycling initiatives. "The worst thing you could do in solid waste is landfill," the commissioner said, adding that the draft plan contained minimal actionable recommendations and that staff would need to remain engaged on pilot projects and contract language.
Commissioners noted the city's contract with Republic Services expires in roughly 18 months and said Republic has asked for a five-year extension. City Attorney and staff clarified that any extension would be governed by existing contract provisions.
The commission gave consensus for a commissioner to work with city staff and the city attorney on renewal discussions with Republic, including potential pilot programs and contract provisions to align with the city's waste-reduction goals. The commission also discussed a proposed ordinance to allow authorized textile-recycling vendors at city drop-off locations and suggested staff could bring model language to a future meeting.
