Board discusses SRO contract, adds officer for later‑shift coverage; summer duty handled as overtime

Senior Investigator Bray of the Albany County Sheriff's Office attended the meeting and asked whether SRO coverage extends into the summer for summer programs. “I just noticed that it's dated for the school year. Do we have any coverage in the summer when we have summer programs?” Bray asked.
District staff said that in the prior year summer presence by deputies working special events or programs was treated as overtime rather than built into the base contract. “I think last year we treated that as overtime, if they work here in the summertime and we did have a presence on campus,” Bill, district staff, said. The board discussed maintaining that approach and ensuring coverage for summer programming as needed.
Board members also discussed an addition to the contracted SRO staffing. The district said it is adding one SRO position intended to provide second‑shift coverage for after‑school activities; the new officer would overlap about an hour with existing deputies and the officer on second shift would be scheduled to remain until roughly 9:30 p.m., with overtime paid if needed for longer events.
Board members asked whether the contract changed the SROs’ roles and responsibilities. The district indicated some role clarifications will be included in the contract updates. Senior Investigator Bray and board members thanked deputies and staff for their work and the district said it would provide any remaining contract details to the board.
