The Needham Commission on Disabilities reported May 20 that it had sent a letter in support of a Town Meeting item to award grant funding to the Charles River Center housing project; the item passed at Town Meeting.
Commission member Maureen, who attended Town Meeting, described lengthy discussion before the vote and said the outcome was overwhelmingly positive: “I would say it was literally 95% support in that room,” she said, noting a small minority opposed and that the finance committee had not recommended the item. Maureen said the finance committee suggested treating the funds as a loan, but the Community Preservation Committee (CPC) had applied for grant funding and opposed changing it to a loan.
Commissioners said the project is in schematic design and that developers still need to secure multiple sources of financing before construction can start. Early project materials discussed about 86 units, with roughly half of those intended for people with autism or other intellectual disabilities, and five units reserved for Charles River Center staff to provide on-site overnight support. Meeting participants estimated a best-case opening around 2028 but cautioned that financing steps could extend that timeline.
The commission’s letter to Lisonbee Steinfeld (the town’s affordable-housing contact) was delivered to the correct person after an initial routing confusion, and commissioners said they will continue to follow design and permitting steps as they seek future input opportunities.
No formal vote by the Commission on Disabilities was recorded at the May 20 meeting regarding additional action beyond the submitted letter.
