Parks staff report construction and program updates: Romke pool progress, Matson Field groundbreaking set for June 30 and several facility improvements

Parks staff briefed the Moorhead Park Advisory Board on construction progress at Romke Pool, a scheduled groundbreaking for Matson Field, course upgrades and other summer operations.
Paul (parks staff) said excavation and underground plumbing work at Romke Pool resumed in late April, with pool‑house masonry and soon‑to‑begin concrete work for the pool house and pool shell. He described the project as “overall on track” but noted recent rain had slowed work. Paul added that visitors can see site progress and that interior plumbing was nearing completion.
Board members were told the Matson Field (Legion baseball stadium) project is a phased project with construction beginning July 1 and a planned groundbreaking event on June 30 during a Legion game; staff said invitations will be extended to the board and other stakeholders.
Sean (parks staff) described work at Woodland (disc golf) where staff have added mulch around baskets, cleaned tee boxes and ordered new double‑chained tournament‑style baskets that staff expect to install this summer. He said the redesign aims to improve safety for walkers and other park users.
Staff reported the Village Green pickleball courts are in the painting stage and should be ready soon, weather permitting. Staff also described small facility improvements such as branded rate signs at golf facilities, replacement water fountains and ADA and grading repairs at neighborhood recreation centers.
On staffing, Sean said seasonal hiring for 2025 is fully staffed and that the department is reviewing seasonal wages for 2026 to remain competitive. The board was also briefed on special events this summer (River Arts, Farmers Market, Moorhead Juneteenth at Concordia) and the Young/"Yumkombe" Center’s program offerings for seniors.
Staff concluded with a recommendation to continue monitoring project schedules and to return to the board with additional updates as projects advance.
