Timeline and procurement Karen Henry said DPW has received three proposals and plans oral vendor presentations in June, contract negotiation in July and then a phased implementation schedule:
- Alpha (system setup and software/data validation): early 2026 - Beta (field pilot installations of thousands of meters): mid‑2026 - Full-scale deployment: 2027–2029
DPW expects the procurement to include a meter data management system and phased installations to test data validation, operations and customer notifications before county‑wide rollout.
Why it matters DPW and council members discussed how AMI will allow customers to see near‑real‑time usage, receive alerts for unusual consumption, and allow DPW to locate large leaks faster. Henry described a recent county leak that would have been identified much faster with AMI: “That alarm coming to us saying, look, there’s a user that’s using way more water than they normally do. We would have been able to identify it, shut off their water till they could get that leak fixed rather than spend 36 hours looking for a leak.”
Costs and next steps DPW showed AMI costs in the FY26–FY31 capital program and said the project will reduce long‑term non‑revenue water and improve customer service. The department will return with contract details after procurement steps complete and will coordinate any necessary code or billing-rule changes tied to AMI data and discount/adjustment programs.
