Teacher urges pay for overnight Arlington Echo trips, warns Title I students missing out

A commenter who identified their work with Arlington Echo told the Anne Arundel County Council on Oct. 11 that overnight field-trip participation has fallen and that teachers are not compensated for the extra responsibilities those trips require. "So part of our proposal for this year was to find teachers who spend the night in Arlington Echo...the teachers are not compensated for that," the commenter said.
The speaker said when they began working with Arlington Echo in 2006, a larger share of schools chose overnight experiences; now fewer do so and fewer Title I schools participate. The commenter estimated that under 10% of schools now choose to stay overnight and said 80-plus percent of the schools sending students on overnight trips are more affluent, meaning Title I students get fewer of those experiences.
Commenters described the workload for teachers on overnight trips, including supervising large groups and arranging for students’ care during extended stays. They urged the council or the school system to consider compensation or supports so that more schools, including Title I campuses, can participate.
No formal council action was taken during the public comment period; the issue was presented as a recommendation from a community education partner.
