Bill would expand state tuition assistance program for Texas Military Department members

The Committee on Veteran Affairs heard House Bill 290, a priority bill for the Texas Military Department introduced with Representative Lopez and explained to the committee by Senator Hagenboo.
Hagenboo described the bill as an expansion of the state tuition assistance program for Texas Military Department members and distinguished it from the federal Hazelwood Act. He said the bill would extend the maximum semester credit hours that can be covered from 12 to 15 per term, extend eligibility from five academic years to seven, and revise the maximum number of assistance awards from 30 to 45. “HB 290 supports these service members, and emphasizes their right to higher education with extension of state tuition assistance program,” Hagenboo said.
Hagenboo said the bill is intended to reward participants for service without making major changes to the program’s structure. A resource witness from the Texas Military Department attended the hearing. Public testimony was opened and closed with no registrants, and the committee left HB 290 pending.
