House adds Space Force to state code to extend parity for veterans' benefits

The Oregon House on May 22 passed House Bill 39 68, which updates state statutory language to include the United States Space Force among recognized military services in state law and ensure parity for veterans’ benefits and recognition.

Representative Paul Evans, the bill carrier, described the change as a simple but necessary update: “This bill is literally as simple as adding Space Force into the 16 pages of legalese that are in our code to ensure that veterans of the newest … service, Space Force, that they actually have the same benefits,” Evans said. He noted the Space Force is a Department of Defense service branch and that the bill follows a federal change recognizing the service.

Representative Sanchez asked floor questions about the new branch and whether members had been seen in uniform; Evans replied he had met personnel who moved from electronic warfare roles into Space Force service. Some members expressed uncertainty about the new branch and its visible activities, but supporters stressed that service members from any branch are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice and merit equal recognition and benefits.

Representative Kate emphasized the point: “Regardless of if we have seen these guardians … every single person who … is willing to make the same ultimate sacrifice for our country … would still be willing to make that sacrifice,” she said.

After discussion, the clerk opened the voting system and the bill “having received the constitutional majority” was declared passed. The measure is technical in nature and does not on its face create new benefits, but it aligns state statute with federal recognition to ensure Space Force members are treated like other service members under Oregon law. The bill will now proceed to the Senate for consideration.
