PUNTA GORDA, Fla. — The Historic Preservation Advisory Board on May 22 discussed a long-standing proposal to create a history walk at Ponce De Leon Park that would feature donated statuary and interpretive information, and heard an update on recent restoration and lighting installed on the AC Freeman statue.
Longtime board members said the park presently houses multiple donated Ponce de Leon statues in storage or scattered locations and that a coordinated history walk could present a broader local story including Calusa history and pioneer settlement. Lucille Ponte (board member) and Kent Kressler had previously worked on a plan for a history walk and asked that the board discuss longer-term plans and basic maintenance needs for the park, which board members described as needing bathroom and other repairs.
Board members also discussed fundraising options for long-term maintenance of the AC Freeman statue. Several members recommended contacting Team Punta Gorda — a local nonprofit that can receive donations and set up accounts for projects. Board member Charlie Noble said staff is looking into fundraising and that organizers are weighing whether any funds collected should be restricted to the Punta Gorda statue or be available for the artist's broader project. Staff reported that scaffolding has been removed, the final piece of copper placed, and two grid-powered lights installed to illuminate the statue at night. The board said it will pursue fundraising options with Team Punta Gorda and other community partners.
No binding fundraising decisions were made; staff and board members agreed to follow up on park planning and fundraising logistics.
