PUNTA GORDA, Fla. — City staff told the Punta Gorda Historic Preservation Advisory Board on May 22 that homeowners affected by contributing-structure changes made about two years ago will receive mailed notices next week explaining their status and the implications.
Board member Dawn Good told the advisory board she wanted the board to identify the items it wants on a joint meeting agenda with City Council, including the AC Freeman House, and asked staff to clarify which properties were added or removed from the contributing-structure list two years earlier. Danielle Burhouse, senior project manager for urban design, said the city manager asked staff to compile the board’s list of agenda items for the joint meeting. Rachel Berry, appearing for the record as city staff, said three letter templates are ready and, "we plan on mailing those out next week." Berry said the templates explain benefits and drawbacks of being on the list and cover owners added to, removed from, or unchanged on the contributing-structure list.
The board discussed scheduling and related coordination. Board members asked that the AC Freeman House be an agenda item; Melissa Reichardt confirmed the Charlotte-DeSoto Building Industry Association had scheduled a meeting with staff to discuss a proposal related to the Freeman House and that the Freeman House will be an agenda item once staff has meeting outcomes to share.
Discussion points included whether the board wanted a narrow agenda item (the subset of properties changed two years ago) or broader topics tied to preservation policy. Berry described the communication plan and said the mailed notices will explain certificate-of-appropriateness requirements and other regulatory impacts for properties on the local list.
The board did not take a formal vote on policy changes during the meeting; staff described next steps and a timeline for mailings and for arranging the joint meeting with City Council.
