"I found a potential grant to pay for the downtown generator. It's a $75.25 split. Grant deadline is January 20," said Fred (committee member), during the capital and budget discussion. The meeting later corrected the application timeline: the pre-application deadline is June 20.
Fred advised the committee that ordering a generator before grant approval could make the county ineligible for grant reimbursement. He recommended applying for two separate grants—one to update the county's hazard-mitigation plan and one to purchase and install the generator—so that approval of one application would not block the other. "My recommendation is we send in a grant application for the plan update and then we send in an application for the purchase of the generator and the installation and that way if one gets shut down the other one can still proceed," Fred said.
Staff noted the grant requires a hazard-mitigation plan and that the county's plan is near the end of its five-year cycle and must be renewed. Committee members discussed potential project elements, including purchasing or leasing property to site the generator; Fred said he believed the grant could cover property acquisition but advised seeking formal grant guidance.
Brian Gift was identified in the meeting as the staff member looking at applying to update the plan. The committee did not make a funding commitment during this meeting but asked staff to pursue grant application details quickly because of the approaching June 20 pre-application deadline.
No specific generator make, model or fuel source was required by the grant discussion recorded on the transcript; when asked, staff said the generator would be specified in the grant application and the grant program intends to ensure the unit is appropriately sized for the county's needs.
