Marlington board approves alternate tax budget; treasurer and superintendent authorities affirmed

The Marlington Local School District Board of Education approved the district's alternate tax budget and several routine financial and administrative resolutions at its Jan. 7 regular meeting.
The board voted to approve minutes from its Dec. 19 special meeting and the December regular meeting. It also approved the treasurer's authority resolution allowing the treasurer to pay bills within appropriation limits when merchandise is received or contractual obligations become due, and a superintendent-authority resolution that authorizes the superintendent or designee to act for the board on surplus property, procurement and federal grant applications and reports.
Treasurer Robert "Bob" Buscher presented the alternate tax budget and described the filing as a formal request to the county budget commission for levy-collected monies. "This is essentially a formal request from us to the budget commission, the county to, to receive the monies that are taxed for each of our levies," Buscher said. "It's a formal request to say we have the need. We are requesting that we these monies be deposited to us."
In the document presented to the board, the district's estimated receipts for the coming year included a total general fund estimate of $15,276,788 and a permanent improvement estimate of $641,531. The treasurer noted the tax budget filing is required by state law each year by Jan. 20.
A board member asked about a longstanding bond amount referenced in the treasurer authority resolution; the transcript records the question but no numerical change or new bond amount was provided. Staff said they would look into whether that bond amount remains standard but no change was adopted at the meeting.
All financial motions recorded in the meeting passed on roll-call votes with all members voting yes.
The board announced its next regular meeting for Thursday, Feb. 20, 2025, at 6 p.m. in the District Learning Center at Marlington High School. Announcements during the meeting also included a reminder that Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Jan. 20) will be observed with no school, and upcoming parent-teacher conferences in February.
