County schedules site visit after petition to abandon historic road near Highway 10

Sam Scott with the Clerk and Recorder's Office said the office received a petition to abandon the road described in Road Plat Book 1, page 48, lying within Tract 2 of Certificate of Survey 3917 in the south half of Section 20, Township 14 North Range 20 West. Scott said affected landowners had been notified, the petition fee had been paid, and the office had certified the petition as valid. Scott said all affected landowners had consented to the petition and that notice of the hearing was published twice in the Missoulian.
Mike Tester from the Surveyor's Office gave historical context: the road appears in surveyor plat books from the late 19th–early 20th century, likely pre-dating U.S. Highway 10, and portions of the route to the north have already been vacated by the commission. He characterized the request as a cleanup to avoid later issues for an incoming subdivision.
Scott said the county scheduled a road viewing for May 28 at 3:30 p.m. with Commissioner Strohmeyer and that the next public hearing on the petition is set for June 5; no final decision was made at this meeting. Staff invited petitioners and other interested parties to attend the viewing and hearing so that the commission could consider field conditions before acting.
No formal motion was made at this meeting; staff indicated the process will continue with the scheduled site visit and the June 5 public hearing.
