School committee members said removing and replacing ceiling tiles at the time of sprinkler installation is a practical and cost-effective step because many of the tiles would not be reusable once the sprinkler work is complete. The town’s revolving and capital committees recommended the change order, and presenters said the amount fits within the project contingency, leaving roughly $341,000 in contingency funds.
Officials said the sprinkler installation will tie into work already performed on the gym, STEM labs and cafeteria and that doing the ceiling tiles during the summer reduces disruption to school operations. The project team reported the overall addition is on schedule for substantial completion in late June and occupancy in the fall.
Council action: Councilman Russo moved to grant the change order in the amount of $158,575; the motion passed by voice vote. Multiple council members discussed how sprinkler work reduces other required upgrades, such as extensive door and ramp work, and said the approach may save money over replacing alarm systems alone.
Next steps: The change order work is scheduled to take place during the summer construction window; school and facilities staff will continue to monitor progress and contingency balances and report to the council.
