The Washington Court House City Council voted unanimously Jan. 8 to place five resolutions confirming appointments to local advisory boards on first reading, actions that advance the nominations to the council’s next consideration.
The actions came after a resident, Della Kester Key of 1311 Farmington Lane, used the public comment period to ask how people are chosen for city boards and commissions. “How are the, folks that are on them? How are they chosen or picked to be on these boards?” Key asked.
Joseph J. Dennon, the city manager, responded that staff try to avoid bringing forward candidates without “a general consensus” and that the council and city officials discuss who will “work well” on particular bodies. He said the administration considers background and how a candidate would fit a board’s work, and that some boards require a larger investment in orientation than others.
Council members moved and seconded motions to place each resolution on first reading; roll-call votes recorded unanimous “yes” responses from the council members present. The items placed on first reading were confirmations of appointments to the Board of Zoning Appeals, Civil Service Commission, Planning Commission and the Tree Committee.
Votes at a glance: R1-2025 — reappointment of Tammy Bath to the Board of Zoning Appeals (term to 12/31/2028) — placed on first reading, unanimous roll-call vote. R2-2025 — appointment of Martin Renison to the Civil Service Commission (term to 12/31/2027) — placed on first reading, unanimous roll-call vote. R3-2025 — reappointment of Branson Moody to the Board of Zoning Appeals (term to 12/31/2028) — placed on first reading, unanimous roll-call vote. R4-2025 — reappointment of Kirk Wilson to the Planning Commission (term to 12/31/2028) — placed on first reading, unanimous roll-call vote. R5-2025 — appointment of Michelle Patton to the Tree Committee (term to 12/31/2028) — placed on first reading, unanimous roll-call vote.
Council members and staff generally framed the confirmations as routine appointments, and Dennon noted that some positions can become “fairly controversial” depending on the issue the board handles. Dennon said council members sometimes suggest names and that staff weigh whether a prospective member can be brought up to speed for technical bodies such as the planning commission.
The council also approved minutes from its Dec. 23, 2024 meeting and heard brief committee and staff remarks thanking public works crews for snow removal. No ordinances or budget items were decided at this meeting.
