The South Kitsap School Board voted to change the June 4 meeting format to a student-led study session featuring the Circle of Champions; students will rehearse topics and board members will moderate student groups.
On May 21 the South Kitsap Board of Directors voted to change the format of its June 4 meeting to a student-led study session featuring the student Circle of Champions.
Superintendent Tim Winter described plans for a rehearsal with the 16 student champions and said the June 4 format will let students "take your place" at the board table while a board member moderates. The rehearsal will be at the high school library and will focus on four topics: what it's like to be a high school student, the high school bell schedule, student voice, and cell phone policy.
Tim said the rehearsal is meant to support students and reduce anxiety: board members would each moderate a small group of students and the board would reconvene at the end of the study session to debrief, summarize and celebrate. Anna Tenzler, identified in the meeting as the superintendent's executive assistant, suggested a small celebration such as cake after the student presentations.
Board member motioned to change the June 4 format; another board member seconded. The motion passed by voice vote; the chair announced, "Ayes have it." Tim said the student rehearsal will occur the Thursday prior to the study session to allow time for students and board members to plan.
Ending: District staff said the study session will be student-driven, board members will provide support and moderation, and the district will hold a rehearsal with the Circle of Champions prior to the June 4 meeting.
