Springdale — Springdale City Council announced May 21 it will form a zoning and building-code revision committee to scope and coordinate comprehensive updates to the city's zoning and building rules.
Council President said the committee will include one council member, one planning commission member and one Board of Zoning Appeals member as voting representatives, plus nonvoting administrative staff from planning, zoning, public works, police and other departments as needed. The council member slot will be selected at the next council meeting on June 4.
Why it matters: Council and administration said a broader review is needed to address outdated language, improve user guidance and resolve recurring issues raised in recent committee work, including urban farming and rental housing discussions. The committee is intended to scope problems, propose updates and coordinate public engagement and planning commission review.
Council explained the committee will be self-forming after appointment and expected to do scoping work this year with substantive drafting and reviews to continue into next year. Administration said the city planner already has a list of sections for review, including modernization of formatting and clarifying illustrations for residents.
Councilor Vanover volunteered to serve as the council representative during the meeting. The committee will collect public input and can route draft changes to planning commission and council, as appropriate, depending on the subject matter.
Next steps: Council will appoint its representative June 4 and planning and BZA will nominate their members. The committee will then begin scoping and public outreach work this year; specific ordinance changes will follow the committee's recommendations and required public hearings.
