Resident urges stop sign and speed humps on Walker Street near downtown square

During the public comments period of the May 5 Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting, Eric Espie of 12027 Campbell Street asked the town to act on what he described as growing speeding and pedestrian‑safety concerns on Walker Street.
Espie said the area between Chester and Polk, near the downtown square and a recently expanded park and soccer complex, has a 20 mph speed limit but that “most everybody is 35 or higher.” He requested the board install a stop sign at Greenlee and Walker to convert the intersection to a four‑way stop and said speed humps or speed bumps should be installed on Walker between Greenlee and Chester to slow traffic when events are occurring and children are out of school. “We're gonna have kids out of school who are out and about more frequently during the day… I think there's a problem here that you have a chance to address,” Espie said.
The mayor thanked Espie and said staff would follow up if the issue is not addressed during the meeting’s agenda items. No formal motion or vote was taken on the public comment; staff said they would have the commenter’s contact information and follow up outside the meeting.
