Clinton County officials approve mover quote, plan storage lease while courthouse is renovated

The most immediate action was approving a quote from 2 Men in a Truck to move courthouse contents to the new county building. The commissioners voted to approve the mover’s quote; the board recorded the motion as carrying 3-0.
The storage plan discussed at the meeting centers on a single large unit owned by Bill Miller, the former Keeney’s service station near the CVS and behind the museum. Judge Mueller, who presented the proposal to the board, said the building is “5,000 square feet” and “all 1 large, uninterrupted unit,” with a new roof, furnace and garage doors that would accommodate large items and auctions.
Judge Mueller said the county negotiated a rate of $6 per square foot, which “would be a total of $30,000 for the year.” The proposed contract length is nine months with an option to extend three additional months, reflecting the expectation that renovations will take “somewhere between the 9 to 12 months.” He also said Miller would rekey the unit and pay utilities.
County offices reviewed budgets and identified funds to share moving and storage costs. Judge Mueller told the board that council members had “agreed to set aside $20,000” and that the offices collectively estimated they could contribute about $43,000 toward moving and storage expenses. The judge said a formal contract with Miller would be brought to the commissioners at a future meeting.
On moving, Mr. Sheets, the commissioner liaison, reported that the county solicited quotes and selected 2 Men in a Truck; he said the company provided the appraisal for moving the entire courthouse. The total cost for moving, as reported during the meeting, was $27,680. The board approved the mover quote by motion (vote recorded 3-0).
Discussion: Commissioners asked whether a contract would be ready at the next meeting; Judge Mueller replied, “I can. Yeah. Yep.” The judge also noted some items would be held short-term for use by the clerk, prosecutor and courts while staff work from the new building and return periodically for files.
Next steps: The county expects to finalize a lease contract with Miller and proceed with the contracted move. The commissioners asked staff to bring contract documents to the next meeting for formal consideration.
