The Unified School District of Antigo voted to sell East Elementary using sealed bids and directed staff and the building-and-grounds committee to develop bid parameters, deed restrictions and a timeline for bids.
A board member moved to sell the property by sealed bid to avoid realtor fees and save on sale costs; the motion to use sealed bids carried. During discussion board members suggested the committee consider a minimum bid, deed restrictions (including at least one suggested restriction that the property not be reused as a school), and a restriction limiting family or business bidders to a single bid.
Board member Dr. Dave Barto, recounting prior experience with sealed-bid sales, recommended setting a minimum bid and limiting one bid per family or business to avoid strategic bid behavior.
Administrators said the committee will set the sealed-bid due date once the district completes work on East Elementary and will present a recommendation to the board. The board agreed that the board president and the superintendent (or their designees) would open bids.
Why it matters: Selling district property can affect community assets, future land use and district finances. Deed restrictions and minimum-bid settings will shape the range of potential buyers and allowable future uses.
Next steps: Building-and-grounds committee will draft recommended bid instructions, deed restrictions and a minimum starting bid for board approval; a future meeting will set the sealed-bid deadline and open-bid procedures.
