The Unified School District of Antigo Board of Education voted to name its new elementary school John H. Bradley Elementary during its regular meeting.
The board approved the name by voice vote after a motion from board member Scott Peterson; the motion carried. Tom Bradley, speaking for the Bradley family, said the family was “humbled” by the honor and thanked the board. The board also described plans to connect the new school’s curriculum to Bradley’s legacy and to implement the “Leader in Me” program at the elementary level as part of broader leadership development that will continue through middle and high school.
Why it matters: Board members framed the naming as part of an effort to rebuild pride in the district and to create local connections between students and community role models. Superintendent-level staff (administration) described using the school name to support curriculum links and character/leadership lessons.
During discussion board members invited the Bradley family to participate in the groundbreaking ceremony; the board said members of the family would be asked to “have a shovel in hand” for the first dirt-turning. Several board members offered brief remarks of gratitude to the Bradley family for the honoree’s service to the community.
The motion passed by voice vote; no formal roll-call tally was read into the record.
Looking ahead: The board said a future announcement will set the date for groundbreaking and invited the Bradley family to participate. No changes to school design or timeline were made at the meeting.
