Plainfield SD 202 recognizes National Merit scholars, career-pathway endorsements and Wilco winners

Plainfield School District 202 used the May 21 board meeting to recognize student and staff achievements from the school year, including National Merit honors, state awards for staff and college-and-career pathway endorsements.
Superintendent Dr. Glenn Wood and district staff highlighted awards given at the Illinois "Those Who Excel" ceremony. Dr. Wood congratulated staff recognized at the event and praised the Class of 2025 for its accomplishments. Paula, a district staff member who led recognitions, announced that three seniors had been named National Merit Scholars; each scholarship carried a $2,500 award as described in the meeting. The scholars named in the meeting were Connor Orr (Plainfield East High School), Omer Mesquio (Plainfield North High School) and Serena Sabzali (Plainfield North High School). Paula also introduced student awardees for competitive events, including Evan Margalis, a Plainfield East senior who won a gold medal in welding at the State SkillsUSA competition and is eligible to attend the National Leadership and Skills Conference in Atlanta.
The board also recognized 58 students districtwide who earned the College and Career Pathway Endorsement (CCPE) to their diplomas; 12 students RSVP'd to attend the meeting and were presented plaques and certificates. The endorsements represented multiple pathways such as health and science technology, manufacturing and trades, agriculture and natural resources, and human and public services.
In the Wilco liaison report, board members said the Wilco Area Career Center approved expenditures for May and authorized travel for two students — Evan Margalis and Daniel Juana — to attend the national competition in Atlanta under the supervision of district staff; funding for that travel was reported as having been raised by the organization and student-activity accounts. The meeting also noted a 4% raise approved for Wilco Career Center support staff.
