Highwood council approves special-use permit for Vape 312 at 417 Sheridan Road

The Highwood City Council on May 20 approved an ordinance granting a special-use permit for a vape shop, Vape 312, to operate at 417 Sheridan Road, voting to waive the first reading and approve the ordinance as presented.

Council members said the ordinance process typically requires two readings under the city code, but the council may waive the first reading when an item is uncontroversial. A staff member explained, “ordinances under our code require 2 readings, but we typically waive the first reading just to approve it the first time it's on.”

The council made a motion to waive the first reading and approve the ordinance; the motion was seconded and passed by roll call. Alderson Bauer voted “aye,” Alderson Hansen voted “aye,” Alderman Peterson voted “aye,” and Alderman Mark Kutzis voted “aye.” There was no public input on the item during the meeting.

The ordinance will take effect according to the city’s typical procedural timeline for adopted ordinances. The council did not identify any amendments or conditions attached to the special-use permit during the vote.
