Supervisors table decision on Woodbury County Solid Waste Agency secretary pay, cite inactive board

Supervisor Dietrich told the board that Jeanette Beekman, secretary for the Woodbury County Solid Waste Agency, is paid $300 for each meeting and that the agency has not held meetings for about 30 months. Dietrich said Beekman performs work outside meetings—coordinating with the Iowa DNR, arranging environmental testing and working with engineers on landfill monitoring—but without a functional agency board the county should not move forward with payments from the landfill fund.
Dietrich moved to table the item until a board is assembled to comply with the agency’s bylaws; Supervisor Nelson seconded the motion. The board voted 4-0 to table the question.
Board members urged local towns to help reconstitute the agency board so regular meetings can resume and thanked Beekman for the work she has done in the interim. One supervisor noted the secretary “only gets paid if they have a meeting” and emphasized that many of her duties have continued despite the lack of meetings.
No payment was approved at the meeting; the matter was tabled pending formation of a board and further action.
