Tomball economic development staff outlines First Baptist schematic design; TDC highlights summer youth hires

TDC staff said the board approved a professional services agreement to produce schematic design work for the First Baptist Church redevelopment and that the TDC intends to make project documents and community engagement materials publicly available on a TDC web page so residents can review schematics and meeting materials as they become available.
Tiffany, TDC staff, said the board approved the schematic-design phase with Studio Red Architects and that additional phases and any larger budgetary commitments will follow the city’s budget process. “We want this to be a community project,” Tiffany said, adding the TDC will post updates and plan public meetings once schematics are ready.
The TDC presentation also covered the 2025 Summer Youth Employment Program: staff said 20 local businesses committed to offer more than 32 internship positions and the program received 118 applications, up from 58 in 2024; interns will work June–August.
Council members asked for clarity on the Studio Red agreement and whether future steps would return to council. Tiffany and other staff said the schematic-design portion was approved within the TDC budget previously adopted by council; any larger next-phase funding would appear in future budget documents and, if required, come back to council for authorization.
TDC staff said the board also approved contracting support for public outreach on the First Baptist project and will schedule community workshops once schematic materials are ready. Staff said a ribbon cutting for Metal Sync — the final lot sale in the Tomball Business and Technology Park — is set for May 20 at 2 p.m.
The council did not take additional action on the First Baptist redevelopment at the May 19 meeting; staff said they will return with design materials, budget requests and formal agreements as those items are developed.
