Harris County officials reported at the Board of Commissioners meeting on May 20 that Hudson Mill Bridge over Mulberry Creek has been closed after inspection showed scouring and erosion under bridge pilings.
County staff said Georgia Department of Transportation closed the road on a Saturday and that initial county engineering visits occurred the following Monday. EMC Engineering was engaged to assess the condition; staff said EMC's initial visit was May 12 and a follow-up multi-disciplinary team inspected the site. An engineering report issued April 28 recommended developing a remediation plan; county staff said the bridge failure occurred May 10 and that EMC is preparing drawings and cost estimates to present to the county.
The county manager described the closure as an emergency and said the contractor working through EMC estimated the remediation would take about 30 days once work begins. Staff did not provide a final cost estimate at the May 20 meeting and told commissioners they would have additional details and potential authorization requests in the coming days.
