Harris County approves renewed inmate housing agreement with Georgia Department of Corrections at $30 per inmate per day

The Harris County Board of Commissioners approved an intergovernmental agreement renewal with the Georgia Department of Corrections on May 20 that continues the county jail’s capacity at up to 160 inmates and raises the per-inmate payment to $30 per day.
County staff said the current agreement paid $24 per inmate per day and that the proposed renewal, effective July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026, increases that rate to $30 per inmate per day. Officials noted the change represents a substantial rise in revenue for the county’s detention operations — staff ran an example showing an increase of more than $328,000 on an assumed population of 150 inmates.
The county manager and other speakers told commissioners they had petitioned state legislators for the increase and welcomed the higher reimbursement. The board voted to approve the intergovernmental agreement and authorized the county manager to execute the necessary documents.
The agreement term presented to the board runs from July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026; commissioners did not attach additional conditions in the meeting record.
