Newton County fire services approved to apply for Auto Club Foundation grant and renew Rockdale mutual-aid agreement

Deputy Chief Craig Lumpkin of Newton County Fire Services asked the board May 20 to authorize two items: an application to the Auto Club Foundation to buy traffic-safety educational materials and adoption of an updated mutual and automatic aid agreement with Rockdale County. Both actions were approved by the commissioners.
Lumpkin told the board the Auto Club Foundation grant is a no-match opportunity to purchase materials “to present in front of students as well as the community.” The board moved and seconded approval to apply; the motion passed on a voice vote.
On mutual aid, Lumpkin described the Rockdale County agreement as an update used by neighboring counties to authorize cross-jurisdictional assistance. He said the updated agreement was presented by Rockdale’s new fire chief, Jimmy Robinson, and covers stations that border Rockdale (stations 14, 7, 8 and 9). The board approved the updated mutual-aid agreement unanimously.
Lumpkin said the mutual-aid arrangements are used routinely—for example, Newton units assisted Rockdale during a prior major incident—and the update formalizes continuing cooperation. No additional county funds were requested; both items were approvals to apply or to adopt the agreement.
