Buckhorn High School graduates Class of 2025; school recognized as Purple Star military-friendly

Senior class president Joshua Friend opened the ceremony, saying, “My name is Joshua Friend, and I have the honor of being your senior class president, at least for the next hour or so. It is my great privilege to welcome you all to Buckhorn High School's commencement ceremony for the class of 2025.”
The ceremony recognized students who plan to enter the military and announced Buckhorn’s participation in the Alabama Purple Star Schools program, described in the ceremony as a state initiative to recognize K‑12 schools that support military students and their families. School and district officials in attendance included Madison County Schools Superintendent Ken Kubik and members of the Madison County Board of Education.
Student speakers encouraged graduates to embrace change and new opportunities. Class vice president Ashlyn Friend asked guests to hold applause during recognitions; student speaker Jackson McMurtry told classmates, “Be the coolest person you know.” The ceremony also recognized students in the top 10% of the graduating class and named several graduates who will enter the Army, Air Force and National Guard.
Officials and staff listed at the ceremony included (as introduced) Superintendent Ken Kubik; Daniel Evans, chief of staff; Karen O’Bannon, chief financial officer; Dr. Mark Minsky, chief operations officer; Allen Perkins, assistant superintendent of student support services; and board president Brian Brooks and board vice president Heath Jones, among others. Lavelle Everett was introduced as principal of Buckhorn High School. The Buckhorn High School concert choir performed under director Kirsten Daughtry.
Near the ceremony’s conclusion, a presenter formally presented the graduates: “On behalf of the Madison County Board of Education and Buckhorn High School, I present to you the Buckhorn High School graduating class of 02/2025.”
Speakers and ceremony materials noted many post‑graduation paths, including college, trade school, military service and the workforce. No formal district policy or board action was taken during the ceremony; the event was a graduation and recognition ceremony rather than a meeting for governance or policy decisions.
