Parks staff presented a multi-site capital update on May 20 that covered fence repairs, bathroom renovations, picnic table and bleacher replacements, court resurfacing, path repairs, and other ongoing projects across village parks.
The overview matters because these capital investments affect park safety, accessibility and program delivery and feed into the department's five‑year capital improvement plan (CIP).
Mike summarized completed and in‑progress items: northwest fence repairs at KLM and County Line; Burns Field bathroom renovations that included new stalls and fixtures funded in part by the Hinsdale Paddle Tennis Association; delivery of 22 new picnic tables for KLM and Burlington Park; painting of the diving/baby pool; and awarded court replacement contracts to J & R First Asphalt (start weather‑dependent, with a 1–1.5 month expected construction window plus cure time). He said court work will require full court closures during construction.
John, from Public Services, reported ongoing operations: contract arrangements for weekend garbage service, bathroom inspections and stocking, windscreen and tennis strap installs at Stout Park courts, removal of dead park trees, brush clearing at multiple parks, and layout and maintenance of 24 athletic fields (23 soccer, one lacrosse, three tee ball, one softball). Staff also completed path repairs at Robbins and Brook, with Burns and Highland scheduled.
On seating and spectator areas, staff said new ADA‑compliant bleachers have been ordered for Brook and Pierce Park; the ADA features include guard rails and side/back fencing to meet current standards. Commissioners asked whether the pool or park seating and surfacing choices could be revisited; staff noted funding tradeoffs and that poured‑in‑place surfacing is costlier than engineered wood fiber. Mike said table and bench sponsorships are being used to offset capital costs and that donations can accelerate replacements but the village maintains capital budgeting authority.
Staff said capital planning continues and the commission will be asked for suggestions ahead of the July discussion of the five‑year CIP.
