Groveport Madison board reconsiders and approves certificated personnel list after initial vote fails

The Groveport Madison Local School District Board of Education voted to approve certificated personnel items after reconsidering the question following an initial failed vote.

The superintendent recommended approval of the certificated personnel list, noting “there was 1 addition” and that a new certificated handout included “1 administrative non renewal” added to page 2. During the first roll call, the motion did not receive the required three affirmative votes and failed: Kirschner voted no; Doudleberger and Bauer voted yes; Walsh voted no. The board subsequently moved to reconsider the matter and then voted to approve the certificated personnel items: Kirschner voted no; Doudleberger, Bauer and Gray voted yes; Walsh voted no. The motion therefore passed.

Board members discussed contract terms during the reconsideration motion. A board member said they “don't see a great purpose in 5 year contracts,” and expressed concern that long contracts leave the district “on the hook” if staff resign before the term ends. The superintendent and other board members did not present a substitute contract term during the meeting.

No additional policy or statutory authority was cited during the discussion beyond routine board procedures; the superintendent offered to circulate a document outlining the retire/rehire and personnel processes and confirmed names were available on BoardDocs.

The board recorded the final action by roll call and the superintendent will proceed with administrative follow-up as required by district process.
