Iowa City Community School District staff presented a planned pilot of team teaching for elementary grades at an Education Committee meeting, saying the change aims to raise student proficiency and give teachers more focused professional practice. The district plans a schoolwide pilot in three buildings — Kirkwood, Horn and Lenny — for grades 3–5 with limited second-grade trials, and nine additional schools will each field at least one team to try elements of the model.
District staff said the pilot responds to declining assessment and universal screening trends and is intended to improve student growth by increasing collective teacher efficacy and allowing teachers to concentrate on fewer content areas. “This has been a fabulous team of educators that we've had the opportunity to meet with twice, in the last, like, 5 to 6 weeks to kinda really build out what team teaching could look like for us here in ICCSD,” said Eliza (staff member), who led the presentation.
