Sherburne County proclaims May 2025 Foster Care Month, honors foster families and youth

Sherburne County commissioners on May 20 adopted a proclamation declaring May 2025 as Foster Care Month in the county and presented awards to foster caregivers and a foster youth.
The proclamation — introduced by county Human Services staff and Licensing and Intake Supervisor Mitch Fennell — recognized child and adult foster-care providers for providing stable, compassionate homes and noted the role of relatives who care for kin when biological parents cannot. The department presented a child foster-care award to Kirby and Jessica Sundit, praised by the nominating staff member for creating an accessible placement for a medically frail child and for assembling medical care and school supports. The county also recognized Margie and Dan Peterson as adult foster-care providers for stepping in during a crisis and helping a young adult stabilize and thrive.
Commissioners spoke in support of foster families and staff, thanking providers for their service and noting the importance of foster care to the child-welfare system. The board voted to approve the proclamation by roll call and invited award recipients to join commissioners for photos.
Staff also named A. B. Snee as Foster Child of the Year, noting the youth’s academic achievements, pending high-school graduation and acceptance to Minnesota State University, Mankato. The board moved the proclamation and awards through the consent process and directed staff to finalize the proclamation for public distribution.
