Members of the Moorhead Human Rights Commission reported that Moorhead’s Juneteenth celebration is scheduled for June 19 from 3 to 7 p.m. at Concordia College.
The commission’s Awards Committee said nominations for the Destiny Holiday Award closed the previous day and a subcommittee is reviewing nominations. The chosen recipient will be notified by June 5 and will receive the Destiny Holiday Award at the Juneteenth celebration, with presentation planned for roughly 4 to 5 p.m. during the event.
The Awards Committee chair noted that the Juneteenth celebration is a group effort involving local organizers; Frederick Edwards (expected speaker) was not present at the meeting, so committee members confirmed the event logistics in his absence. The commission also announced it will not hold its regular meeting in June in observance of Juneteenth.
Additional community announcements included a community “huddle” at the Berry (Christiansen Alumni Center) Auditorium on June 5 hosted by Minnesota State Moorhead and Legal Services of Northwest Minnesota, an ongoing farmers market on June 3 where SNAP/EBT tokens are tripled, and a Scandinavian Festival June 20 at Viking Ship Park’s Viking Encampment.
Ending: Commissioners asked for no additional new business and adjourned at 5:46 p.m.
