GMSD board approves 2025 teacher tenure recommendations, honors recipients

The Germantown Municipal School District Board of Education voted unanimously May 19 to approve teacher tenure recommendations for 2025 and held an in-meeting recognition of the educators who earned tenure.

The board approved the tenure list on a motion made by board member Christopher Curry and seconded by board member Jerry Ellis; the roll call showed all voting members present and voting yes. The board then recessed the business meeting so guests could join the recipients for a certificate presentation and cake.

The action matters because tenure is a formal personnel milestone in the district; during the meeting Alyssa Stratton of the GMSD human resources department described the standard used to recommend tenure. "Tenure is simply not given, it is earned," Stratton said, explaining that candidates must complete a probationary status in a Tennessee public school and have earned level-of-effectiveness scores of either "above expectations" or "significantly above expectations" in the last two years, as determined through classroom and professional evaluations and student achievement and growth data.

Board members used the recognition portion of the agenda to thank the teachers for their work. "This is one of the most impactful votes that we take each year as a board," Curry said during the meeting. Ellis added: "Thank you so much. Just the time and energy and effort that you all have put to get to this point. It means so much to everyone in this district." Those remarks preceded the formal presentation of tenure letters and certificates by principals and district leaders.

During the presentation, principals and the assistant superintendent of exceptional education joined newly tenured staff at the front of the room as their names were called; the district named tenured educators from multiple schools including Dogwood, Farmington, Forest Hill, Houston Bridal School, Houston High School, Riverdale Elementary and district-level exceptional education staff. The board paused business to allow a reception in the lobby honoring the recipients.

The vote approved the personnel recommendations that appear on the board's official tenure roster for February 2025. No amendments or dissenting votes were recorded at the meeting.

The board record shows the motion carried unanimously; the district will maintain the formal tenure lists and individual personnel files in accordance with district policy and state law.
