East Ramapo voters approve school budget; two trustees elected

Voters approved the East Ramapo Central School District budget on May 20, the board announced after canvassing ballots. The board’s vice president read the unofficial results and said, “There were a total of 1,882 votes cast,” and that the budget passed. The board also announced the winners of two trustee races: Sabrina Charles-Pierre for Ward 2 and Ephraim Weismandel for Ward 9.

The vote result was announced after the Board of Education completed its regularly scheduled meeting and return from executive session. Board President Rose thanked staff and district administrators for preparing and presenting the budget. She said the board and staff were “really excited about being able to provide the children the services that they need, all children in the district.”

Interim Superintendent DeCarlo had earlier told the meeting that, if the budget passed, the district would designate roughly $5.2 million for repairs and capital work. He described a plan to move some of the budgeted funds into a capital reserve to begin deferred maintenance and repair projects.

The board read the results publicly; no additional vote tallies were announced in the public record beyond the vice president’s reading of the total ballots and the declaration that the budget passed. The board said the tallies provided were unofficial and thanked the staff who counted ballots.

The board adjourned after reading the results and congratulated the newly elected trustees. The district did not announce further implementation steps for the budget in the public session that followed the vote.
