City council approves Sunnyside Road complete‑streets design contract; public workshop included in scope

The Temple Terrace City Council on May 20 approved a design task work order with engineering consultant Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson (JMT) for the Sunnyside Road Complete Streets project, authorizing a design fee up to $259,202.
City Engineer Brian McCarthy described the corridor limits: Sunnyside Road runs from South River Hills Avenue north to Fuller Parkway and is identified by the city’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee as a corridor for pedestrian and bicycle improvements. He said utility work and patches from a prior water main project prompted staff to reconsider the street’s resurfacing scope and to evaluate safety, speed and pedestrian connectivity, especially in light of the proposed River Hills park and downtown CRA pedestrian master plan.
The approved scope includes survey work, one public workshop intended to be held during design to expedite the Florida Department of Transportation review process, and final design. McCarthy told the council the construction‑planning range was $184,000–$259,000 depending on workshop outcomes; council approved the upper amount during the meeting.
Councilmembers stressed outreach. Mayor and council asked staff to ensure wide notice for the single public workshop and to consider a project website or an online comment/FAQ feature so residents who cannot attend in person can comment during the design process. Councilmember Kravitz offered to connect staff with an active neighborhood watch leader on Sunnyside to ensure broader local input.
The resolution passed by voice vote with no nays. Staff said they will schedule the workshop and proceed with the JMT contract negotiation and scope finalization.
