District outlines summer facilities work, Purdy campus purchase and Gig Harbor turf plan

Peninsula School District staff presented a summer capital and facilities update March 20 that covered auditorium lighting and control-system replacement, playground upgrades, the district’s recent land purchase around Purdy and Peninsula campuses, and plans to turf the lower Gig Harbor High School field.
Patrick Gillespie, director of maintenance and facilities, said the campus lighting controller and dimmer system in the PHS auditorium is obsolete and cannot reliably support modern LED fixtures; bids for a control-system replacement and LED retrofit were due the week following the meeting. Kelsey, the district’s CTE lead, told the board the upgrade will also support CTE and theater-technical instruction so students can train on industry-standard lighting equipment rather than temporary rentals.
Gillespie described playground work at Harbor Heights and Purdy — including rubber surfacing and accessible play components — and said designers and parent advisory committees are finalizing selections. He also reviewed the March 31 property closing that added roughly 25 acres around Purdy and Peninsula campus parcels; Gig Harbor Fire Medic 1 will use several houses on the site for training while the district evaluates long-term uses.
On athletics, facilities staff outlined a proposal to turf Gig Harbor High School’s lower field, add field lighting, resurface the track, and upgrade fencing, scoreboard and survey work. The project will require permitting and is expected to be bid and contracted in the spring with construction likely in the spring/summer of the following year; staff said the district plans to fund the work out of capital project balances.
The board did not vote on major capital budgets at the meeting; staff said some bids (auditorium panel) were due soon and that specific contracts would return to the board for approval when bids are complete.
