Taylor Gorringe, an 11‑year member of the Tooele Boys & Girls Club and the Utah State Youth of the Year, delivered her competition speech to the Tooele City Council on May 21 as practice ahead of the Pacific Region contest in June.
Gorringe described how the club’s art program and staff helped her during family hardship and a mental‑health struggle following the pandemic. She said the club provided stability and opportunities, including a street‑law class and an internship at the firm Foley & Lardner, and that she plans to attend law school and become an attorney. Her remarks ran through examples of how club staff and peers supported her development.
Council members praised Gorringe’s speech and her club involvement. One councilmember thanked Darlene Dixon, who the council noted has worked with the Boys & Girls Club for 40 years and announced her retirement. The council wished Gorringe success in the upcoming regional competition.
