Morgan County Council approves short-term hire to finish records scanning

The Morgan County Council on Wednesday approved a temporary part-time hire in the clerk’s records department to finish a countywide file-scanning project ahead of a planned office move.

Tammy Parker, who oversees the records scanning project in the clerk’s office, told the council the position is needed only until the office move in July or early August. “My part time position was in the records department that you approved to help with scanning of the files. She took a, another part time position in another department, and, I would like to fill that position. And it's only gonna be until we move,” Parker said.

Council members said the county has budgeted funds for the temporary hire. Councilman Keller moved to approve the request; Troy Sprinkle seconded the motion. The council voted unanimously to approve the short-term position.

Parker said the in‑house scanning effort has saved the county money compared with outsourcing. Council members recalled the outside quote was roughly $500,000 to have the county documents scanned, and they thanked Parker for using county staff to complete the work.

The position will be paid from the existing perpetuation/records line item, and council members said the hire is limited to the period before the clerk’s office relocation. No additional long-term staffing changes or salary increases were approved at the meeting.

The council handled the hire as part of its new-business agenda before moving to a financial and legislative presentation later in the meeting.
