East Central Independent School District trustees heard a presentation on a revised P-TECH pathway that will align high-school dual-credit courses and senior-year certifications with an Associate of Applied Science in radiologic technology at San Antonio College.
The roadmap matters because it maps an explicit pathway from middle school through college that district leaders say will reduce barriers to postsecondary credentialing and increase work-based learning opportunities within health care for district students.
Dr. Homan, who spoke to the board, said the district has reconfigured the pathway so dual-credit courses (including two biology courses, specified math and English) will transfer into San Antonio College’s radiology technologist AAS. "We are making dual credit courses more aligned to an Associate of Applied Science in radiology technologist, with San Antonio College," Dr. Homan said. He also emphasized that the senior year should include hands-on, work-based learning and industry certifications such as nursing aide, medical assistant, patient care technician or pharmacy technology.
The presentation lays out a sequence of planning conversations that the district will begin in students’ eighth-grade year so those who choose the pathway can enroll in the appropriate high-school coursework. District staff described a goal that students who complete the sequence could transition directly into San Antonio College or another Alamo Colleges District campus to continue toward the AAS.
Board members asked about industry and clinical partners. Staff listed existing agreements and clinical sites used by the district’s health programs, including CountryCare Manor in La Vernia for nursing aide licensure and clinical rotations with Methodist-affiliated clinics and hospitals. "Every program that we have, that we offer, we do offer business industry partnerships that our students go to to get that hands on experience," a district presenter said.
District staff said the roadmap is a draft intended to be shared with families and to be scaled across other career pathways. No formal board vote or policy change was taken; the item was presented as an informational update.
Staff said next steps include communicating the roadmap to families, crosswalking transcripts with partner colleges, and continuing to develop work-based learning agreements so students can obtain both certifications and college credit.
Trustees and staff noted that specific course placements may change depending on students’ prior credits and that the district will continue coordinating with postsecondary partners to finalize transfer articulation.
