City traffic officials told the Fall River City Traffic and Parking board that the city plans to install wider, plateau-style speed tables at multiple locations identified for accident history or problematic speeding.
Board members heard that the devices — described as wider than traditional speed humps or bumps and raised above the roadway — will be installed at selected sites, including the Industrial Park, where staff said they have seen drag racing and excessive speeds. “They are the ones that are wider than your traditional speed hump or speed bump. It's a raised surface. They're gonna be placed in different locations throughout the city, that have been earmarked for, accidents or problematic speeding,” the meeting chair said.
The board did not vote on individual installations during the meeting. Staff said site selections and final approvals will follow normal traffic review processes within the city’s traffic department. No ordinance change or funding appropriation was presented for a vote at the session.
Why it matters: Traffic-calming devices can alter speeds and local enforcement needs; placing them typically requires engineering review and follow-up for signage and maintenance. City staff told the board the measures are intended for identified high-speed corridors but did not provide a final site list or timeline.
Board material and meeting remarks indicated the initiative remains in a planning stage; the city will return with specific locations and implementation details for any formal actions.
