Commission approves middle school additions, drainage work at Wayne J. Bartels Middle School

The Portage City Planning Commission approved site-plan modifications at Wayne J. Bartels Middle School that add three small "bump-out" building additions totaling about 5,980 square feet and include drainage improvements and demolition/reconstruction of the front canopy.
City staff described exterior modifications on the west side of the building, new pavement drainage work including culverts and infiltration trenches on the north and east sides, a new concrete loading pad and interior renovations. Staff said the additions fit within the existing footprint and do not intrude on the adjacent practice football field; a small area toward the ball diamonds will be affected but no expansion into the field was planned.
Commissioners asked whether the drop-off loop or access around the building would change; staff said no full drive-around access is being added and that circulation remains similar to current conditions. Drainage outfalls were discussed, with staff explaining the flow path toward School Road and New Pinery Road via existing sidewalks and drainage corridors.
A motion to approve the site plan as submitted carried by roll call; Feeney, Paul, Egan, Voss, Matt Kreiner and Sulik voted yes.
